Franklin D. Roosevelt
Democrat
Served 3 terms March 4, 1933-April 12,1945
Vice President
1st Term: John Garner
2nd Term: Henry Wallace
3rd Term: Harry Truman
When Roosevelt became president in 1933 the United States had been hit by the stock market crash and was in a very hard time. Roosevelt helped get the nation out of it’s misery. He used the New Deal, which helped the economy. The Great Depression caused unemployment throughout the nation, and left the banks unstable. Also he led the United States through a victory in WW11. I think that Roosevelt deserves an A for his presidency.
One of Roosevelt’s main goals during the beginning of his presidency was to create jobs. He used federal recruiting in order to help. Although it helped at the beginning it didn’t end unemployment. Roosevelt started with the One Hundred Day Congress, and also created the New Deal, which was helping the recovery of the nation. During his second term his main goals was to end the depression. During WW11 Roosevelt’s main goal was neutrality. He wanted to stay neutral to China and Japan during the Japanese invasion. Although, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, he was forced to use U.S. power to protect themselves. That ultimately helped end WW11.
Roosevelt had a very good relationship with Congress. He created the One Hundred Day Congress, and also the Emergency Congressional session in order to pass the New Deal. During his 1st term he passed much legislation. He helped overproduction with the AAA, and the banking laws with the Emergency Banking Relief Act. Work Progress Administration and Tennessee Valley Authority helped create many jobs during the depression also. That gave the country immediate relief. Also, during every election Roosevelt won in the Electoral vote. They were also on the same page when Roosevelt tried to declare war after Pearl Harbor and Congress accepted. Although, after Roosevelt passed the Court Packing Plan of 1937, people thought that he was looking out for his best interests instead of the countries. The public was mad and after that no legislation was passed.
Roosevelt’s most positive outcome would be the New Deal he made. It gave people immediate help when everything was going wrong. He wanted to fix the nation. He tried to fix all of the causes of the depression. He passed laws that helped fix overproduction, some that helped stabilize the banks, and also help inflate U.S. currency. Although the depression didn’t end till WW11, the New Deal helped America overall.
Roosevelt’s most negative outcome would be the Court Packing Plan of 1937. Although it didn’t greatly impact the nation he lost a lot of support when he tried to pass it. He tried to make it so that every judge over 65 could get replaced by a new justice if they did not retire. He wanted new justices because the Court was declaring some of the New Deal laws unconstitutional. Congress denied his request and the nation was mad. It took away his support.
FDR was one of the top presidents to this day. HE created and passed acts that are still around today. Social Security was created, the Securities and Exchange Commission was passed when he was in office and they are still used today. He influenced many people around the world and made a big impact for future presidents.
I think Roosevelt did an excellent job as president. He definitely deserves an A for his presidency because if you think about it the day he stepped into office he was faced with a challenge. He led the entire nation not only through a depression but also through WW11. Although he didn’t stay a complete isolationist he came out with a victory. For that, he should deserve an A.
